7698 | Seneca Village was established before 1835. "When a dam and lock known as number four were built at Seneca, and navigation commenced in 1835, enterprising men built mills there to make use of the available water power, and as a result a flourishing village of about 140 inhabitants was established. Jacob Turner, a contractor for the Grand River Navigation Co., had a saw mill, James B. Holden operated a grist mill and Alpheus D. Mackey had a wool carding mill and cloth factory. James Little opened the post office on January 6, 1839, which he ran there until 1846 when he and the post office moved to Caledonia. In 1846 there was also a planing machine, chair factory, two stores, three taversn, a physician, a cabinet maker, three shoemakers, three blacksmiths, one turner and a tailor. Seneca Village met the same fate as many other hamlets because the plank road went through Caledonia, the railway by-passed the Village, floods destroyed the dam and bridge and navigation on the river ceased." | THOMPSON, William (I647)
