Since Henry was age 30 on September 18, 1844 when he landed in New York, his birth year was calculated as circa 1814.

Residence:
His daughter, Clementina May, was born around this time, since she was age 75 when she died on June 29, 1917.

Immigration:
The Captain of the ship was William H. Allan. The ?i?Virginia?/i? had left Liverpool. Henry was accompanied by his wife, 3 children, and his mother-in-law, Mary Henderson. Henry was describes as age 30, male, a servant, from Ireland, and going to the United States. He was not on the same page of the Manifest as his family. His last name was written as if it was spelled "Mayer" or "Mayes".

Occupation:
The address was 28 Yonge Street. The numbering began at the "Bay" (lakeshore) with the even numbers on the east side of Yonge Street. [Was this his store or his home, or both?]

Occupation:
The County Jail was situated at the foot of Berkeley Street at the Lake Shore. It was capable of accommodating 60 male prisoners, 25 female prisoners, and 15 debtors. The average number in prison was 75. The hours of admittance for visitors were from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The Chief Gaoler was John Kidd. The turnkeys were Henry May, James Boyan, and Samuel Beatty.

Residence:
This might not be the same 'Henry May'. Also living on the same lot is "George May".

Family:
Henry was probably the person who made the arrangements for the burial of his mother-in-law, Mary Henderson, to be buried in Potter's Field Cemetery, since she was described in the Potter's Field Cemetery records as "mother-in-law of Henry May".

Residence:
The house was owned by James Nunan.

Henry married Ellen HENDERSON in 1835 in Ossory Diocese, Ireland. Ellen (daughter of Mary) was born about 1819 in Ireland; and died. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Did some of Ellen's brothers or cousins come to Canada from Ireland with the Thompson, May, Wellwood, and Rudd families? There are several Henderson's who were born in Ireland but died in Toronto, including James Henderson (b. 1822), Mr. Henderson (b. 1818), Robert Henderson (b. 1803), and Sarah Henderson (b. 1843).

Name:
When her son, Albert Duncan May, died, her name was given as "Mary Jane". The informant was Frank A. Parker, his nephew.
