    Birth:
Since he was age 77 when he died on September 18, 1880, his birth year was calculated as circa 1803.

    Birth:
William's birthdate was calculated by Cecil Holmes Thompson from his age at death on his gravestone. The gravestone said that he died aged 77 years, 1 month, 10 days on September 18, 1880.

    Marriage:
There is a reference to the 1831 marriage of a William Thompson in Freshford in the Dublin Record Office.

    Residence:
At the time of his marriage, William was recorded as being "of Rahan, Co. Kilkenny". Since Cecil has put a question mark here, it is possible that Rahan could be in Queens County.

    Residence:
The farms were "five miles south of Caledonia and one mile east of the Grand River".

    Religion:
When Seneca Village was being established, its people sought a place to worship. "In 1838 there was a Walpole Mission of the Wesleyan methodists and it included a congregation at Seneca on the Grand River.
The Wesleyan Methodists met in the schoolhouse which was at the north-west corner of Onondaga Street and Argyle Streets [Caledonia]. In 1848 Thomas Cosford, the Minister, was stationed in Seneca. The lost 13, 14, and 15 on the north-west corner of Tuscarora Street and Argyle Street were acquired and the manse was built there.
The congregation met in the schoolhouse until 1844 when a church was built on land which the congregation had previously obtained on King William Street. The lot was 2 chains by 3 chains. There were burials there before the church was built. In 1878, the Wesleyan Methodist built a new church in Caledonia, which is now Grace United Church. The original church at Seneca was sold. There were burials in the cemetery until almost 1900."

    Residence:
Seneca Village was established before 1835. "When a dam and lock known as number four were built at Seneca, and navigation commenced in 1835, enterprising men built mills there to make use of the available water power, and as a result a flourishing village of about 140 inhabitants was established.
Jacob Turner, a contractor for the Grand River Navigation Co., had a saw mill, James B. Holden operated a grist mill and Alpheus D. Mackey had a wool carding mill and cloth factory. James Little opened the post office on January 6, 1839, which he ran there until 1846 when he and the post office moved to Caledonia.
In 1846 there was also a planing machine, chair factory, two stores, three taversn, a physician, a cabinet maker, three shoemakers, three blacksmiths, one turner and a tailor.
Seneca Village met the same fate as many other hamlets because the plank road went through Caledonia, the railway by-passed the Village, floods destroyed the dam and bridge and navigation on the river ceased."

    Residence:
William was living in Haldimand County. He was listed on the Haldimand County collector's roll for 1837. His brother, Jacob Thompson, was listed as well. William paid 1 shilling, 8 pence for the District Tax, and 9 pence for the 'Members Wage', for a total assessment of 2 shillings, 5 pence.
