In his will, he described his land holding as "being comprised of part of lot number forty four, south of Green Point, which said parcel is __ of ___ is butted and bounded or may be otherwise known as follows, that is to say: commencing at the ___ edge at the limits between lots number forty three and fifty four, thence north sixty one degrees west, hence north twenty nice degrees thirty minutes east, two chains more or less to the street running from the highway to the waters edge, thence south sixty one degrees east four chains forty six links more or less to the waters edge, thence south along the waters edge two chains to the place of beginning, containing by ___ measurement, one acres of land be the same more or less together with all the ___ ____ _____ thereto belonging".

Will:
In his will, he gave his occupation as a carpenter, and his residence as Sophiasburgh Township. He left all his real and personal estate to his eldest daughter, Mary Curlett "now Mary Bennett, wife of Aaron Bennett of the City of Rochester in the State of New York, Boatman". He also appointed Mary as his executrix. His will was witnessed by G. A. Brown and James F. Curlett (M.D.)

Family history:
"The family story, passed down over the generations, is that Robert Emmet Curlette was a descendant of the Hugenouts of France." His ancestors "are said to have fled to Ireland. It is not clear at this time exactly when this happened or which route they took. The handed down story in the North American branch of the family is that they first went to Scotland, but left there for Ireland when the Protestants were persecuted in Scotland in the late 1600's."

Family history:
"The story in the current Irish branch of the Curlett family, one of whom we have contacted, is that 3 Curlett brothers came to Ireland from England (likely the Isle of Man) with Oliver Cromwell in 1649, or slightly later, as part of the British policy of settling Englishmen (Protestants) on the lands of the dispossessed Irish (Catholics). The 3 brothers are said to have settled in the County of Down in the villages of Inch/Downpatrick, Kilmegan/Dundrum and Kilkeel respectively. A review of birth, baptism and marriage rrecords for the period 1790-1870 (the earliest ones available) for Curlett in Ireland shows three clusters of Curletts around those 3 locations during that period. The earliest records of a Curlett in Ireland [that] we have found to date are of 2 marriages in 1720 in the Inch/Downpatrict area. Thus, the circumstantial evidence supports the Irish branch version."

Family history:
"The passed down story in his Canadian descendants is that Robert Emmet Curlett was from the Inch/Downpatrick area of Ireland. The story is told that in 1798 he joined his cousin, Robert Emmet, in the Irish Rebellion of that year against the British. The rebellion failed because the promised French support did not materialize. Robert Emmet, the cousin, was captured by the British and hung as a traitor. Robert Emmet Curlett, along with others, excaped and hid in the coastal caves east of Belfast until they could board a ship out of the country. Several of the excapees, it is said, including Robert Emmet Curlett, after landing in New York, came to the United Empire Loyalist stronghold around Belleville, Ontario. That is the story of how Robert Emmet Curlett came to North America."

Land:
Robert did not own land in the area of Green Point either in his name or his wife's name. He may have been a tenant on land belonging to his father-in-law, John Trumpour.

Immigration:
"Why Robert E. Curlett, with his alleged history of anti-British activity, came to a Loyalist stronghold in Upper Canada is not clear. One explanation is that others in his group had family or friends in the Belleville area. It is alleged that one of his travelling companions was a Mr. Wilson, who had descendants who became leaders in Belleville politics."

He "took part in the Emmett Rebellion in 1798, and had he been caught by the British Government, his fate would have been the same as that of Robert Emmett, who was his cousin, who was executed for his participation in this Rebellion".

"The story passed down through the generations is that Robert Emmet Curlett decided to fight on the American side during the War of 1812 and was killed at the Battle of Queenston Heights in February 1812. To date, we have not been able to verify this story and have been unable to find any record of his death."

"It is said (in a family letter, written in 1932 by Grace Curlette Hyman, then aged 77) that, during the period 1807-1812, he operated a legal distillery on lot 44, Concession 2, SW of Green Point. A review of the Prince Edward County land title records shows that all 93 acres of lot 44 were owned by Robert's father-in-law, John Trompour, during that period, so that could be true. We found no record of Robert Emmet Curlett owning any land in Prince Edward County."

Her petition read "That your petitioner is the daughter of John Trumpour Sen. of the Township of Sophiasburgh a U.E. Loyalist, That she is married to Robert Curlett of Sophiasburgh and has never received any land or order of land from the Crown. Wherefore your Petitioner prays that your Excellency may be pleased to grant her two hundred acres of the waste lands of the Crown and permit Ebenezer Washburn Esquire or his lawful agent to locate the same and take out the Deed when completed. And your petitioner will ever pray. Sophiasburgh 29th Jan. 1807. Her Mark. Tina X Curlett".

Tina signed (with an "X" mark) a sworn statement to Nicholas Lazier, that "she is the person, she dexcribes herself to be in the within petition that she is married to Robert Curlett and has never received any land or order for land from the Crown."
Then, Nicholas Lazier certified that Tina had signed the document.

Richard Arless Flint found John Trumpour's petition for land in RG1, Manuscript Section, Public Archives of Canada, in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, on November 17, 1971.

Land:
"Green Point was formerly called Grassy Point. John Trumpour was the first settler there and kept a Public House, the first in the Township."

Burial:
[Since there were approximately 9 tombstones and footstones in this cemetery that were illegible, John Trumpour and his wife could be buried there.]

Burial:
John could be buried in the Top of the Hill cemetery. This burying ground "was located on County Road 15 (concession 1, SWGP, lot 40 (County Road 15) however nothing remains at the site. Permission was apparently received to build a house upon the property, and this still stands." The Wanamakers recorded 3 burials here. It is believed that the stones were transferred to Glenwood Cemetery, Picton.

Religion:
"At one time nearly all of the family [Trumpour] belonged to the Society of Friends".

Residence:
John's house at Grassy Point was recorded in Hans Waltimeyer's diary in 1797 as being a place where people stayed and where the Militia trained annually. In 1799, Waltimeyer mentions that Grassy Point used to be an Indian village. "Even though Trumpour's house is here now, they still come occasionally to stay a while".

John was at Sorel with Simon Cole. They had written to their families in Ulster County to meet them at Skenesborough. They asked and received passes, permission, and men to help them go to Skenesborough and get their families.

John "of Sophiasburgh & Ameliasburgh" was listed as "A Loyalist within the British Lines at New York."

"John Trumpour, late of Esopus in the State of New York, prays to be admitted as a settler in this district and to have 200 acres of land assigned. He is brother to Paul Trumpour of Adolphus Town, settled under the Instructions of 1783 and, being otherwise a person of good character, a certificate is granted him for 200 acres and the oath of allegiance administered."

Petition for land:
John petitioned for land as a Loyalist and asked for land in the Ninth Township [Murray Township?]. He said that he was "always firmly attached to the British Government and Constitution" and "has come to this settlement with a view to become an inhabitant of it".

This was referred to in the petition by his son, John Trumpour Junior, in 1848 for the property in Murray Township.

Petition for land:
John petitioned for more land as Lord Dorchester's bounty and 50 acres for each member of his family making up 600 acres. He included an affidavit from Peter Van Alstine, Justice of the Peace, saying that John had taken the Oath that the contents of the petition were "true in substance and matter of fact". The Committee replied that John had to "state the number of children which he had in this province previous to 1789".

Designation:
Tina's petition says that "your petitioner is the daughter of John Trumpour Senr. of the Township of Sophiasburgh, a U. E. Loyalist".

Family history:
"The story is told that when Robert [Curlett] joined the American army his father-in-law, John Trumpour, a dedicated United Empire Loyalist, was so upset that he disowned the Curlett family and influenced the Government to expropriate Robert's land. To date, we have not been able to confirm or refute this story. However, circumstantial evidence tends to refute it. The four sons of Robert Emmet [Curlett] all stayed in the Green Point area. The second son, John [Curlett] lived on land close to where Robert's distillery was said to have been and on land owned by his grandfather."
