Originally the lot had been awarded to his father John Trumpour in July 1797 as 200 acres of Family Land and 142 acres ungranted. However, neither John Senior or John Junior had made any improvements according to the inspection report of the local District Agent, so the Crown Land Department in Montreal decided that John should not get the land title. They were going to sell it to John B. McColl who had petitioned to buy the land.
